CURRICULUM/ description
Learn how to compose and execute a figurative graphite drawing, in this 3 hour, hands-on workshop with Canadian artist Heather McLean. You will learn about sourcing inspiration, composition, and practical techniques and tools for creating graphite pieces. Heather is an interdisciplinary artist who has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, and Tokyo and has been published widely internationally. Some drawing experience recommended but not required. For artists of all mediums.

Supply list
1. Mechanical pencils: hb, 3b, 9b (any lead size)
2. Large graphite pencils with a variety of lead darkness (hb, 2b, 6b, 9b recommended)
3. Graphite sticks- variety of lead darkness
4. Kneadabke eraser
5. Basic white eraser
6. Pencil erasers (erasers in a pencil shaped stick you can sharpen)
7. Pencil sharpener of any kind
8. Three different sized rough textured paint brushes for smudging (approximate: one 4mm, one1cm, one 1”)
9. Paper towels or shammy for blending
10. Secondary protector paper sheet (8.5×11” regular paper)
11. Drawing board (make sure its slightly bigger than your paper size and you can work with it in your lap)
12. Masking tape
13. Figurative Photo (face) *see info below
14. Any other reference elements you would like to add (bees, bottlerockets, flowers, Android parts- you do you just bring some references
15. Three pieces of approx. 12×16 Mayfair paper (or any white slightly heavier weight drawing paper of your preference, just not too toothy or grainy and not computer paper thin.) This is for only one drawing, but its good to have extra sheets for mistakes. Size is also up to you, can be bigger or smaller, whatever fits on your drawing board.

*Pre- work suggested for efficiency in the workshop: Please lightly trace/draw/transfer your photo reference(s) onto your Mayfair page(s) ahead of time, otherwise you’ll be drawing a la prima from your reference (not recommended for time). Registrants will receive an email with further instruction on this.

McLean is a translator: pulling ideas from the invisible world into a receivable language. Her work straddles intersection between the phenomenal and the numenal world, using the human form to put the insides on the outside. She examines the man vs. himself conflict, illustrating the many forms of personal civil war, and victory, and the intersection of science and spirituality.

Her main influences include the human drama, music, primates, astrophysics, existentialism, quantum mechanics, biology, psychonautics/psychedelics, sci fi, robot dreams, physical and mental yoga, rebooting and rewiring the human program and loops, Advaitic Hinduism, and tardigrades. Heather lives and works in Calgary, Canada.

Seminar to include a retrospective of her travels and work. The relationship between commerical and personal commissioned art, and the transformation of Daily tattoo work taking a backseat to fine art production and study.

SEMINAR 1

“Skull Painting from Reference”

Saturday July 21st 1pm – 4pm at the Kelowna Curling Club

Skull Painting from Reference

In this 1 day, 3 Hour Painting Workshop, Shawn will demonstrate and walk you through creating a skull painting from reference. We will be working with a limited palette, photo reference and painting a skull over a 3 hour period. The first two hours we will focus on drawing, color mixing and laying down a solid foundation. Then we will work back into the paintings and work towards completion. The structure and anatomy of human skull will be analyzed, with concentration on their distinguishing components. Consideration for anatomy, structure, gesture and mark making will be explored.

Shawn will demonstrate process and go back and forth between active assistance and demonstration. This seminar includes discussion and demonstration on palette setup, medium choices, color mixing, constructing a drawing and painting a skull from reference. Within the seminar, we will elaborate on the power of suggestion and ‘building up’ oil paint to a level of completion.

This course is recommended for the beginner to intermediate level painter, however some experience in painting is encouraged.
